From Napkin to Lab Standard: The Story Behind Our Limited Volume Inserts
In the late 80’s, Jerry Finneran was enjoying a cold beverage at a local pub after work when inspiration struck. Earlier that day, a customer had mentioned a challenge: finding a replacement for the metal spring used to support limited volume inserts in a 12x32 crimp vial.
At the time, metal springs were the only option; they are prone to tangling, awkward assembly, and general frustration in the lab. Jerry began drawing on a cocktail napkin. His sketch showed a spring made entirely of plastic, a simple idea that would soon transform laboratory workflows.
That spring design quickly became a staple in labs everywhere, replacing metal springs and eliminating the hassle of assembly. Today, it’s an industry standard.
Innovation with Purpose
JG Finneran’s Limited Volume Inserts are available with or without bottom springs, ensuring precise sample extraction every time.
- With Bottom Springs: a preassembled polymer spring acts as a shock absorber, protecting the autosampler from bottoming out and preventing damage to both needles, sample containers, and sample.
- Without Bottom Springs: inserts automatically center in the vial and form a great seal with the septa.
Both options feature a conical bottom, allowing the ability to work with smaller samples while using a standard size vial. This design ensures sufficient withdrawal of the smallest amounts without risking sample loss or contamination.
Quality Materials for Precision Work
Manufactured from Type I borosilicate glass or polypropylene, these inserts are available in 50uL and 500uL capacities and are designed to fit 12x32mm and 15x45 vials with Snap Seal™, Snap Ring™, Crimp Top, and Big Mouth neck finishes.
